The Sour arrive with the kind of debut that feels earned rather than engineered. Based in Auckland / Tāmaki Makaurau, the four-piece have built early momentum through volume, instinct and a clear affection for grunge, punk and heavy music that favours impact over polish. Their debut EP Daughters lands on May 1, introducing a band whose identity already sounds fully formed.
The first single, Your God & Mine, wasted little time making noise, debuting at No.1 on the bFM Top 10 and drawing attention across Aotearoa. Follow-up track Hex sharpens that arrival. A ragged, riff-driven anthem about revenge and being underestimated, it carries the loose swagger of classic slacker rock while keeping enough bite in reserve to leave marks.
Across Daughters, The Sour channel heavy riffs, gritty hooks and a refusal to sand down their edges. Yet beneath the distortion sits something broader: a celebration of friendship, whakapapa and wāhine making uncompromising music on their own terms. That sense of purpose gives the record weight beyond its runtime.
The band’s line-up brings together years of experience from across New Zealand’s underground and alternative scenes. Lani Purkis, formerly of Elemeno P and Foamy Ed, handles bass and vocals. Jessie Booth adds guitar and vocals, with credits spanning Ekko Park and Velveteen Shakes. Jana Te Nahu Owen brings drums and vocals shaped by projects including Carnys and Padded Cell, while Tam Matchett rounds things out on guitar and vocals.
To mark the EP’s release, The Sour will play two North Island dates: Whammy Bar on May 9, followed by Moon Bar on May 16. If the singles are any indication, those rooms should prepare for a set that values sweat, noise and solidarity in equal measure.
