Swedish House Mafia have reunited with fellow Swedish artist Lykke Li for the first time on ‘Happiness Is So Sad’, a new single that pairs euphoric electronic production with an exploration of memory, longing and the uneasy space where joy and loss coexist.
Produced by Swedish House Mafia, PARISI and Fred again.., the track was recorded in Stockholm and also features songwriting contributions from Max Martin and Oscar Holter. Premiered by Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the single arrives as another step in the trio’s current creative phase, following the launch of their Superhuman label and a steady run of new releases over the past two years.
Rather than leaning solely on the festival-sized dynamics that have defined much of Swedish House Mafia’s catalogue, ‘Happiness Is So Sad’ takes a more reflective approach. Lykke Li’s unmistakable vocal performance sits at the centre of the song, giving weight to lyrics that examine how happiness can become inseparable from the sadness that follows once a moment has passed.
The collaboration also marks Li’s first new music since the release of The Afterparty earlier this year. The album represented another shift for an artist who has consistently reinvented her sound since breaking through with Youth Novelsin 2008 before reaching a wider audience with ‘I Follow Rivers’. Across nearly two decades, she has established a catalogue built on emotional precision, finding new ways to explore love, heartbreak and identity without repeating herself.
For Swedish House Mafia, the release continues a career that has repeatedly reshaped the possibilities of electronic music. Since forming in 2008, Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso have helped move house music from clubs to stadiums, becoming the first electronic act to sell out Madison Square Garden and the first to close Coachella’s main stage. Their 2022 album Paradise Again demonstrated a willingness to expand beyond the anthems that first defined them, embracing richer textures and broader collaborations while retaining the melodic instincts that made tracks such as ‘Don’t You Worry Child’ and ‘Save The World’ global successes.
The new single also arrives during the trio’s residency at Ushuaïa Ibiza, where it has already become a centrepiece of their performances, and ahead of two homecoming concerts at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg later this month, the largest headline shows of their career.
‘Happiness Is So Sad’ feels like a natural meeting point for two artists who have long balanced emotional vulnerability with ambitious pop and electronic production. Rather than chasing nostalgia, the collaboration looks forward, bringing together two distinct creative identities in a song that is both intimate and expansive.
