Track: Trip Westerns – Showdown Shadow

Sandwiched in-between nationwide tour dates with psych contemporaries Hutch and Floral Image, Brighton’s Trip Westerns return with the heightened melodramas on new single ‘Showdown Shadow’.

Co-produced by the band alongside Jake Smallwood (Sam Abbo) at Farm Road Studios and featuring Ellis Dickson (Fat Dog, ELLiS·D) on drum duties, their first single of 2025 sees the band stay unwaveringly true to that American nostalgia they proudly wear on their sleeve, and on their cowboy hats. With a kind of gloomy tragedy that might have been lifted straight from the grooves of a classic Country & Western ‘78’, ‘Showdown Shadow’ broods and smoulders before crashing through a nerve-tingling combo of thumping 60s soul and sprawling garage-rock.

Discussing more on the track, lead vocalist Harrison Baird-Whitman says:

“The song is a pretty bleak portrait of someone who gets lost in a world they’ve created in their dreams and becomes kind of infatuated with the blurred lines between reality and the fiction they’ve created. Getting wrapped up in the feeling of being in that in-between state but at the same time know they can’t exist like that kind of drives them crazy. Like having a grand night on the town but then dealing with the hangover with multiple bloody marys and so the cycle continues.”

Trilling strings and chord stabs add a melodrama to the track that reflects the lyrical content. The brooding and captivating five minutes of infectious guitar-led Americana are done in the only way the band knows how.
