Track: Tropical Fuck Storm release ‘the Golden Ratio’

Tropical Fuck Storm

Tropical Fuck Storm have announced the upcoming release of their ‘Submersive Behaviour’ 12″, on 3rd February 2023 via Joyful Noise Recordings, it will feature the band’s new single ‘The Golden Ratio’, which is out now.

‘Submersive Behaviour’ is the Australian art-punk combo’s take on the ‘covers record’ concept. ‘The Golden Ratio’ is joined on the 12″ by three tracks from their recent ‘Moonburn’ EP as well as a 19-minute cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s ‘1983 (A Merman I
Should Turn To Be)’.

“Our version of 1983 ‘A Merman I Shall Turn To Be’ is an attempt to right the recent wrongs perpetrated against Hendrix’s classic “Angel” by some idiot from One Direction doing a karaoke-style “tribute” for Jimi’s 80th birthday.”

Gareth Lidiard

On the upcoming album, TFS will put their deranged spin on classics by Jimi Hendrix, Middle Aged in the Middle East in the Middle Ages, Men Men Menstruation, Compliments to the Chef, and The Stooges.

Gareth Liddiard, who until now was not really known for his knowledge of mathematics has explained that the ‘Golden Ratio’ is “when a line is divided into two parts and the longer part (a) divided by, the smaller part (b) is equal to the sum of (a) + (b) divided by (a), which both equal 1.61803398875.” Based on this concept, Liddiard has said that, “Our new song has been crafted to these exact specifications for the purposes of musical excellence.”

The ‘Golden Ratio’ features the distinctive TFS sound – discordant and yet melodic at the same time. The female harmonies offsetting Liddiard’s vocals, it’s like the B52s crossed with Les Miserables on crack, but ultimately a song that has the lyrics “I’m sayin 1.6180339/and two fat ladies/7-5 the Golden Ratio” is genius, as far as I’m concerned.
