Track: With her British tour kicking off today, Frazey Ford drops the honeyed, spectral folk of ‘Saul’

WITH an eleven-date UK tour beginning this evening in Milton Keynes, former Be Good Tanya and ethereally transporting talent in her own right Frazey Ford has released a track recorded for sessions for U Kin B the Sun but whose omittance from the final running order will surely surprise you as much as it does me; a paean to her son, “Saul”, it features an otherworldly vocal turn that’s at once both sibilant like Karen Dalton and rich with honey.

It’s out now as a digital single, it’s beautiful and affecting, Frazey seeming singing through the ether from space beyond, with a warmth and an entirely folkloric quality as well; how can any mere mortal sing like that, right? Hairs: on end.

It’s an ode to motherhood, “simply about the devastating amount of love you have for a child,” she says, and constitutes the sole out-take from the album sessions. Although she began writing the song not long after Saul’s birth, she only added the finishing touches recently.

With an acclaimed run of American dates under her belt, Frazey arrives in the UK today, and there’s Canadian and European dates following early next year; but for now, you can see a genuine talent as follows:

Wednesday, November 17th, Milton Keynes, The Stables;
Thursday and Friday, November 18th and 19th London, Islington, Union Chapel;
Saturday, November 20th, Coventry, Warwick University;
Monday, November 22nd, Bristol, Fiddlers;
Tuesday, November 23rd, Hassocks, Mid Sussex Music Hall;
Thursday, November 25th, Manchester, Gorilla;
Friday, November 26th, Edinburgh, La Belle Angelle;
Saturday, November 27th, Newcastle, Gosforth Civic Hall;
Sunday, November 28th, Leeds, Brudenell Social Club, and
Tuesday, November 30th, Nottingham, The Glee.

Frazey Ford’s “Saul” is out now across digital streaming platforms. Her latest album, U Kin B The Sun, is available digitally, on CD and on vinyl; to get yourself a physical copy, pop over to the Arts & Crafts website, here.

Connect with Frazey elsewhere online at her website and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
