Out now, is the new album, ‘Tilt-A-Whirl’ from US IndiePop band, The Silent Boys. This group of likely lads from Richmond, Virginia, have been creating poppy songs with added jangle for the last three decades.
Right from the off with the effervescent title track, the new album sees The ‘Boys embracing different genres and going off in a multitude of creative directions. There remain nods to IndiePop of yesteryear, such as The Housemartins, Orange Juice, The Smiths, Pre-Out of Time era R.E.M. and the C86 movement within the songs. However the band have corners of the album which harp back to songwriters and bands of the Psychedelic and Rocky 60s; Arthur Lee, Donovan and even Johnny Cash, plus experiments with more of an Alternative-Country sound and Synthpop.
The Silent Boys flirt with John Paul Jones esque Baroque-Pop string arrangements (in the song ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ in particular) and Mariachi-tinged tones abound in Beauty in the 21st Century, creating a collection of vastly diverse musical moods. Elsewhere on this highly accessible and listenable album are a mixture of light (Blue Ocean) and dark (Last Time), but all are Poppy, memorable, Indie anthems from the Lords of the Jangle.
