J Hubner

306 posts
Born in the bosom of the Midwest, USA, J Hubner grew up in a woods next to a cornfield that was just a throwing distance to a lake. Music has been a constant in J Hubner's life since he was a little kid soundtracking epic battles with Star Wars action figures with his older brother's Deep Purple, Megadeth, and W.A.S.P. cassettes. He started playing guitar at 12 and since 2006 has self-released 10 albums under the names Goodbyewave, Sunnydaymassacre, Dream District, and J. Hubner. Three years ago J Hubner began writing about music independently. Album reviews, artist interviews, and general musings on his love of music. He writes at www.jhubner73.com, www.backseatmafia.com, and several smaller musical publications. J Hubner is married with three kids and a miniature schnauzer named Otto. He still resides in the Midwest, USA. Near that same lake.

  • July 19, 2017
  • J Hubner
Listening to Astral TVs Chrystal Shores is like receiving some ancient transmission from deep space. It slowly unfolds through breathing synthesizers and tube-driven circuits these interplanetary melodies. This album evokes…

Album Review : Diagnos’ ‘Diagnos’

  • July 7, 2017
  • J Hubner
Listening to Diagnos’ debut self-titled record is a beguiling experience. It falls somewhere between ambient noise pop and hypnotic electronica. There’s moments where you get lost in the melodic drone…

Album Review : Com Truise ‘Iteration’

  • July 3, 2017
  • J Hubner
Yeah, I know that name annoys some people. It doesn’t me, but I get it. Seth Haley’s musical project Com Truise has been making retro-futuristic electronic music since the release…

Album Review : Jeff Tweedy’s ‘Together At Last’

  • June 27, 2017
  • J Hubner
As I sat listening to Jeff Tweedy’s newest collection of acoustic covers called Together At Last, the thing that hit me first was how much my friend Mark would’ve loved…

Album Review : R. Missing’s ‘Unsummering’ EP

  • June 12, 2017
  • J Hubner
There’s both a quiet cool and a dark tension that permeates R. Missing’s EP Unsummering. Even in their promotional material it says “You won’t find love songs here. You’ll find…

Just by mere chance the one time in the last year I’m on Twitter looking through my feed I see a tweet from Death Waltz Originals guru Spencer Hickman talking…

Album Review : United Waters’ ‘The Narrows’

  • June 6, 2017
  • J Hubner
I won’t pretend to know much about Mouthus. I won’t because I don’t. I know nothing about the noise rock duo that hailed from Brooklyn, New York and who released…

Album Review : Moon Duo’s ‘Occult Architecture Vol. 2’

  • June 6, 2017
  • J Hubner
I think it’s safe to say that Moon Duo’s Ripley Johnson and Sanae Yamada have found their groove. Not that they didn’t have a groove over the last several albums they’ve…

Album Review : Black Cube Marriage’s ‘Astral Cube’

  • June 1, 2017
  • J Hubner
Okay I’ll be honest, I’m not really sure what’s happening on Black Cube Marriage’s Astral Cube. Listening to it for the third time I’m considerably more intrigued than I was…

Album Review : Slowdive ‘Slowdive’

  • June 1, 2017
  • J Hubner
Okay, I must admit that prior to Slowdive’s brand new self-titled album I hadn’t really delved into their music. Yes, I know it’s a travesty and I’m making amends right…
