EP Review: Liza Unveils Her Most Ambitious Work Yet With New EP ‘The Alternate Ending’

Opening up like never before, Liza exudes confidence in its purest and most unfiltered form with her stunning new EP, ‘The Alternate Ending’. The Ethiopian-Canadian singer/songwriter brings a dynamic range to her neo-soul songwriting, seamlessly shifting between moments of hushed intimacy, delicate introspection, and climactic catharsis all delivered with an accessible flourish.

Intricate and ambitious the six-track EP showcases Liza’s angelic vocal as beautifully constructed musicality dances around the central melodies. Opening with the delicate vocal surrounded by beautifully placed vocoders of ‘Shades’, Liza introduces an emotive fragility comparable to Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide and Seek’.

Elsewhere across the EP, ‘Back For More’ introduces more of a straight R&B Pop approach with shuffling beats, swelling production and elegant dual vocals with featuring artist TOBi. ‘Gasoline’ takes a more alternative approach with modulation guitar lines and an uptempo drum beat which drives the track forward with a bedroom-pop charm under the lightly autotune effected lead vocals and silky smooth delivery to capture a beautiful sense of melancholy and experimental aura.

‘In The End’ showcases Liza’s unquestionable abilities as a vocalist over a cinematic R&B backdrop whilst the interlude ‘I’m On You’ brings the stylistic layers of vocal harmonies which permeate through the Ep over a wash of synth and strings.

Closing with the elegant detuned guitar and piano of the title track ‘Alternative Ending’, the Ep ends of an emotive, beautifully musically complex and breathtakingly expansive note.

Thematically, the EP delves into the realms of possibility, exploring divergent paths and myriad “what if” scenarios that might have shaped different journeys. Serving as a continuation of her 2021 debut EP, ‘DONE IS DONE’, it offers an alternate culmination to what was initially envisioned.

She explains:

“‘The Alternate Ending’ delves into the realms of possibility, exploring the divergent paths that could have unfolded and the myriad “what if” scenarios that might have shaped your journey differently.” Liza explains, continuing, “Serving as a continuation of my 2021 debut EP, DONE IS DONE, it offers an alternate culmination to what was initially envisioned.”

A brilliant EP showcasing depth in artistry whilst retaining a radiant commercial appeal, the 6 track release more than solidifies Liza’s place as one to watch.
