EP Review: Semisonic Release Their New EP – You’re Not Alone

Semisonic

After 2 decades away Semisonic have returned with a five track EP entitled ‘You’re Not Alone’ via Pleasuresonic Recordings/Megaforce Records. Due September 18th, the EP was recorded on and off over the last few years at Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer Dan Wilson’s Los Angeles studio with his co-founding bandmates John Munson and Jacob Slichter.

From the opening jangling guitar riff you get a sense that the guys pressed pause on the band only to come back 20 years later and pick up where they left off. You’re not alone is typical Semisonic song with the catchy rhythms and Wilson’s distinct voice straight out of the early 2000s.

Theres a sense of looking back with this EP. Track ‘Basement Tapes’ longs for the past as Wilson sings about still having the basement tapes.

Classic indie with that internal perspective of life full of optimism and hope. This is pure Semisonic in all their ragged, rousing glory, fuelled by lean arrangements and muscular performances of poignant, bittersweet, alt-rock gems.

Tracks like ‘Secret Smile’ and ‘Closing Time’ still sound great, but this EP showcases the bands simply brilliant songwriting. There is no real standout track here, just a wholly brilliant set of songs.
