Originality is a rare commodity in modern cinema. Performance artist and filmmaker Josephine Decker is one of the most original directors of our generation. This month, the Independent Cinema Office (ICO) bring the New Yorker’s two feature films to cinemas across the UK. Decker will also be holding Q&As in person.
The films themselves take a great deal of investment on the behalf of the viewer, but it’s richly rewarded. For whilst Decker’s films are on many levels impenetrable, there’s a creativity and talent which shines through, often long after the credits have rolled.
Admittedly, Thou Wast Mild and Lonely is the superior of the two films, but Butter on Latch is much less ambitious and plays around with Lynchian tendencies. The former is a tale of forbidden mutual attraction whilst the latter charts the breakdown of a friendship. The locations for both feel otherworldly and somehow wrong.
