Live Review: Ed Kuepper & Jim White in The Nolan Gallery, MONA (Museum of Old & New Art), Hobart – Friday, 20th May, 2022.

The seminal legends that are Ed Kuepper (The Saints, Laughing Clowns) and Jim White (Dirty Three) finally made their way to MONA (Museum of Old & New Art) in Hobart to deliver two shows, one on Friday and one on Saturday, within the impressive confines of The Nolan Gallery.

The duo played their way through Ed’s back catalogue, resisting the temptation of making it a pure ‘Greatest Hits’ gig; rather, it was a totally mesmerizing sonic extravaganza which highlighted Ed’s guitar playing and Jim’s free-flowing drumming.

Songs covered material across the entire span of Ed’s career, from the earliest Saints and Laughing Clowns numbers through to the vast array of Ed’s solo works. Songs included Messin’ With The Kid, Knife In The Head, The Year of the Bloated Goat, Everything I’ve Got Belongs To You, Honey Steels Gold and Pavane, amongst others.

The fact that this was a sit-down performance only served to ensure that the brilliance of these two musicians was warmly received and appreciated by the highly attentive audience in attendance.

If you get the chance to see these two Aussie icons on the road, it is time to do yourself a massive favour.
