Live Review: Gavin James – Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre, Kilkenny 21,07,2022

The picturesque venue that is Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre played host to one of Irelands hottest singer songwriters Gavin James who was launching his third album The Sweetest Part which was coming out at midnight and Gavin announced he would be in a local records store the following day signing copies of the album and maybe playing a short set .
There was no support act so Gavin took to the stage at 8.45pm and played till 10.10, opening with just himself on stage and playing Only Love the first track from the new album, before being joined by his two band members. The new album dominated the set list, but it was going to wasn’t it , but that’s not to say there wasn’t plenty of other great songs throughout, Like The Middle were Gavin Stepped forward from the mic and just played to the crowd mic-less. Another highlight was for one kid in the front row where Gavin again stepped forward and held the mic to the kid so they could sing part of Greatest Hits.
The Encore consisted of three songs one being Always which generated a huge sing along and Only Ticket Home where Gavin ran up the centre steps of the Amphitheatre.
The night may have finished a little earlier than most shows but that didn’t take anything away from everyone there loving every minute of it and it also gave plenty of time for Gavin to appear at the merch desk afterwards to chat and sign albums before we had to leave. Maybe that’s why things were timed the way they were.
