There’s something inherently fleeting about summer: the long days, late nights and romances that can feel infinite until the season starts to disappear. For Berlin-based artist Efro, that tension between warmth and impermanence provides the emotional centre of her new single, ‘Lipstick Stains’, arriving 14 August.
A hazy, guitar-led track with plenty of character, ‘Lipstick Stains’ finds Efro leaning further into the loose, analogue feel that has become central to her sound. Fuzzy basslines sit beneath biting guitars, distorted keys and boxy drums, while understated synth washes add a psychedelic blur around the edges. It’s unhurried and sun-drenched, but never overly polished, with a combination of grit and nostalgia that gives the track its own distinct personality.
There are familiar reference points in the mix, from the raw alternative edge of PJ Harvey to the laid-back psychedelia of Sun Room and Dope Lemon. At the same time, there’s a classic-rock cool running through the track, recalling the effortless swagger of Lou Reed and The Strokes. Efro takes those influences and filters them through a lo-fi, surf-tinged aesthetic, resulting in something that feels both retro and contemporary.
The inspiration was straightforward: summer itself.
“Lipstick Stains began as a visualisation of a perfect endless idealistic summer. I first started writing the lyrics by having in mind the things that make summer what it is, long days at the beach, listening to the waves crashing, summer love. Then I came up with the bassline keeping the song moving no matter what and later came the bridge with the song reaching its climax there, kind of portraying those more spontaneous summer moments we all know and love. It’s a love song about summer.”
That idea of an “endless idealistic summer” is reflected in the track’s structure. The bassline keeps things moving, while the later bridge provides the release, mirroring those spontaneous moments that tend to define the best summers. Rather than dwelling on heartbreak, Efro approaches romance through memory, capturing the feeling of something beautiful precisely because it cannot last.
‘Lipstick Stains’ arrives as the latest chapter in a developing catalogue that began with Efro’s debut EP, ‘Year of Yearning’. The release established an artist drawn to indie-rock nostalgia and emotional immediacy, with a knack for combining melodic songwriting with a more rough-edged sonic palette.
Her musical journey has been similarly international. Originally from Athens, Efro moved to Brighton to study before eventually settling in Berlin. The three cities have each played a role in shaping an artistic identity that sits comfortably between indie garage rock, alternative psychedelia and sun-soaked surf textures.
With ‘Lipstick Stains’, Efro doesn’t attempt to overcomplicate its central feeling. Instead, she builds a world around it: warm evenings, waves in the distance, fading romance and the slightly distorted recollection of a season that already feels like a memory.
It’s a song that understands the appeal of summer lies partly in knowing it won’t last, and Efro gives that fleeting feeling a suitably hazy soundtrack.
