Built around sparse acoustic arrangements and Cummings’ unmistakable deep, smoky vocals, ‘I’m Not Crazy’ is among her most unsettling and intimate songs to date. Accompanied by an animated video directed by Lucy Dyson, with additional footage shot by Cummings herself, the track explores themes of fear, coercion and the ways vulnerability can become both a refuge and a trap.
“This is a song about violence. It has a dreaminess to it, dissociation maybe. ‘I won’t hurt you baby, I’m not crazy’ are words that are meant to soothe, but get twisted and used as a warning. The song is about making yourself small and pretty, out of fear.”
The release follows a breakthrough period for the Melbourne artist. Her 2024 album Ramona attracted widespread international acclaim and established her as one of Australia’s most distinctive voices. Once again teaming with Grammy-nominated producer Jonathan Wilson, whose credits include Father John Misty, Angel Olsen and Margo Price, Cummings returned to Topanga Canyon, California to record Bloodhorse!. The new album is described as an exploration of escaping pain and embracing imagination and radical self-acceptance.
Earlier this month, Cummings introduced audiences to material from Bloodhorse! while supporting Father John Misty across Europe, culminating in a sold-out headline performance at London’s George Tavern. To mark the release of ‘I’m Not Crazy’ and previous single ‘My God’, she has also announced a run of Australian dates, where fans will be treated to songs from the new record alongside selections from across her catalogue.
