Following 2026’s ‘Say What?’ and the acclaimed mixtapes BRAZEN and TOO BRAZEN, the Melbourne-based artist once again demonstrates her knack for marrying incisive social commentary with undeniable hooks. Produced by David Arcade and mixed and mastered by Daniel Roberts, the track taps into the nostalgic energy of classic hip-hop while retaining the confidence and wit that have become hallmarks of Brazen Barbie’s music.
Inspired by the production’s throwback feel, the song emerged from memories of schoolyard dynamics and the ways they can evolve into more insidious forms later in life. As Brazen Barbie explains, the track examines how bullying and exclusion can manifest as racism, misogyny and prejudice, while refusing to allow those attitudes to diminish a person’s sense of self.
Despite the weight of its themes, ‘Keep It On The Playground’ delivers its message with a knowing smile. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliott, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, Brazen Barbie balances vulnerability with bravado, transforming difficult observations into something empowering and irresistibly catchy.
Raised in Perth and now based in Melbourne, Brazen Barbie has quickly become one of the country’s most compelling voices in hip hop. Her 2025 mixtapes BRAZEN and TOO BRAZEN established her reputation as a writer unafraid to tackle subjects ranging from ambition and heartbreak to self-discovery and betrayal. Support from Apple Music, triple j, Spotify and outlets including Rolling Stone Australia, Complex and VICE has only accelerated her rise.
Her growing profile has also translated to the stage, with appearances at DARK MOFO, SXSW Sydney, BIGSOUND, Promiseland and Sydney Fringe Festival helping to cement her reputation as a formidable live performer. Meanwhile, her track ‘Pack It Up’ recently featured in the eighth season of US drama The Chi, and later this year she will become only the second Australian artist invited to perform on New York’s influential On The Radar Radio platform.
