Two of contemporary music’s most singular voices are set to return to the Sydney Opera House this year, with Japanese folk visionary Ichiko Aoba and American singer-songwriter Cat Power each taking over the Concert Hall for special performances that underline the venue’s commitment to artists who occupy worlds entirely their own.
Fresh from her spellbinding appearances at Vivid LIVE in 2025, where she transformed the Drama Theatre into something resembling an intimate lounge room, Ichiko Aoba returns on 5 October as part of her Across The Oceans world tour. Performing with a lush ensemble led by composer Taro Umebayashi, the Japanese artist arrives in support of her eighth studio album, Luminescent Creatures. Since the international breakthrough of 2020’s Windswept Adan, Aoba has steadily expanded her audience with music that draws together folk, chamber pop, ambient textures and traditional Japanese influences into something that feels both ancient and impossibly futuristic.

Two months later, Chan Marshall returns to the Opera House under her Cat Power guise for a performance celebrating the 20th anniversary of The Greatest, one of the defining albums of the 2000s. Recorded in Memphis alongside members of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section, the album marked a turning point in Marshall’s career, embracing Southern soul and timeless American songwriting while producing some of her most enduring work. Two decades later, songs such as ‘The Greatest’ and ‘Living Proof’ retain their emotional weight, their understated beauty proving just as devastating now as when the album first emerged.
The Sydney date forms part of a wider Australian and New Zealand run for Cat Power, with the acclaimed singer-songwriter set to perform additional theatre and concert hall shows across both countries. The tour follows last year’s deeply affecting Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert performances, further strengthening Marshall’s longstanding connection with audiences in this part of the world.
Across three decades, Cat Power has built a reputation as one of modern music’s most emotionally compelling performers, while Ichiko Aoba has become one of contemporary folk’s most quietly transformative voices. Their return to Sydney Opera House this year offers audiences two rare opportunities to witness artists whose music transcends genre and whose live performances continue to cast an enduring spell.
