Japanese post-rock pioneers MONO have announced their long-awaited return to Australia, with the revered instrumental outfit set to tour the country in April 2027 in support of their newly released 13th studio album, Snowdrop.

The run will mark MONO’s first Australian shows in four years, bringing their singular blend of orchestral grandeur and shoegaze-infused guitar noise to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. For a band widely regarded as one of the most immersive live experiences in modern rock, the return promises to be a major event for fans who have spent decades following the group’s emotional and cinematic journey.
Released via Temporary Residence, Snowdrop represents a significant new chapter for the Tokyo quartet. It is the first MONO album produced by Brad Wood, following the death of longtime collaborator Steve Albini, whose relationship with the band stretched across some of their most celebrated work. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago, the album sees MONO reunited with conductor Chad McCullough and expanded by a ten-piece orchestra and eight-piece choir, resulting in eight sweeping compositions that transform grief into something unexpectedly hopeful.
Rather than dwell in sorrow, Snowdrop is infused with gratitude and remembrance. Inspired by the symbolic meanings behind flowers left for those who have passed, the record explores themes of loss, memory and the enduring connections that remain long after loved ones are gone. The result is one of the most intimate and emotionally resonant releases in MONO’s quarter-century career.
Formed in 1999, MONO have spent more than 25 years constructing vast instrumental landscapes that blur the lines between post-rock, classical music and shoegaze. Albums such as Hymn To The Immortal Wind, For My Parents and OATH have earned the band a devoted global following, while their live performances have become legendary for their sheer emotional intensity and orchestral scope.
With Snowdrop, MONO once again prove that instrumental music can communicate feelings words often fail to capture. Their return to Australia next year offers audiences another opportunity to experience one of rock’s most quietly transformative forces at full power.
