Four decades into a career defined by restlessness and intent, Kim Gordon continues to reframe what her music can hold. Her third solo album, PLAY ME, arrives on March 13 via Matador Records, pushing her sound into tighter, more immediate territory without losing its sense of inquiry.
“I started singing in a way I hadn’t sung in a long time. This other voice came out.” – Kim Gordon
Lead single NOT TODAY introduces that shift with restraint rather than force. Gordon’s vocal sits in a different register, one she describes as re-emerging after a long absence, creating a quiet tension that carries through the track. The accompanying short film, directed by Rodarte founders Kate and Laura Mulleavy with cinematography by Christopher Blauvelt, places Gordon in a hand-dyed silk tulle dress from an early Rodarte collection, grounding the song in a visual language shaped by memory and continuity.
PLAY ME builds on the exploratory foundations of No Home Record (2019) and The Collective (2024), but sharpens its focus. Working again with producer Justin Raisen, Gordon leans further into rhythm, drawing on motorik repetition and melodic beats. The songs are shorter, more compact, and intentionally fast-moving, reflecting a process driven by momentum rather than polish.
