Simple Minds have announced their return to Australia, with the Scottish icons set to celebrate five decades of music when their V Tour 2027 arrives next February.
The arena run marks the latest chapter in one of the most enduring careers in British rock. Since emerging with 1979 debut Life in a Day, Simple Minds have become synonymous with widescreen anthems and some of the most recognisable songs of the 1980s, building a catalogue that includes ‘Alive and Kicking’, ‘Promised You A Miracle’, ‘Waterfront’, ‘Belfast Child’ and the era-defining ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’. With more than 60 million albums sold worldwide, their legacy remains secure, while the latter track recently entered Spotify’s Billions Club, introducing the band to yet another generation of listeners.
The V Tour 2027 begins at Perth’s RAC Arena on February 13 before heading to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Joining them on all dates will be fellow pioneer Gary Numan, who returns to Australia for the first time in more than a decade.
Simple Minds are frequently cited as an influence by younger artists and still earn praise for performances described by MOJO as possessing energy that remains “undiminished”, the band have managed a feat few of their contemporaries can claim: staying relevant without abandoning the ambition and grandeur that first propelled them onto the world stage.
Numan’s influence on electronic and alternative music can scarcely be overstated. From the groundbreaking success of ‘Are “Friends” Electric?’ and ‘Cars’ to his darker, industrial-tinged later work, the British musician’s fingerprints can be found across countless artists who followed. His brooding live shows have remained a formidable proposition, making his inclusion on the bill a compelling addition in its own right.
Five decades on from their formation, the V Tour 2027 promises more than a victory lap. For Australian audiences, it offers the chance to witness two artists whose impact extends far beyond their biggest hits, and whose music continues to resonate across generations.
