Two of the most significant bands from the late seventies and eighties have just announced a co-headlining UK tour for 2027. What is most remarkable is both – The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Psychedelic Furs, both continued to produce new music and perform stunning shows. To have them together on the same bill without the discomforts of a festival appearance is an even greater bonus.
We last heard from The Psychedelic Furs when they released the magnificent ‘Made of Rain’ (reviewed by me here) and they have played live a few time since in support of the album. despite being a huge fan, I only saw them live for the first time in the short-lived Pandemonium Festival in Melbourne back in 2024, and they were absolutely magnificent (see my review here).
Such is the lure of The Jesus and Mary Chain, I once travelled halfway around the world to see them when they reformed back in 2009 and played at Coachella and Pomona. More recently I saw them in Sydney in 2024 and their performances seem to just get better and better. Their recent album ‘Glasgow Eyes’ was just as visceral and engaging as ever. I interviewed Jim Reid at the time who said of the band’s genesis:
We were listening both kinds of music – we were listening to a lot of 60s girl bands at the time like The Shangri-Las but we would also be listening at the time to The Stooges and The Birthday Party and Einsturzende Neubauten and we thought wouldn’t be amazing if Neubauten was the backing band for the Shangri-Las (laughs) and we thought, why don’t we do that. And that was the seed that ended up being ‘Psycho Candy’.
