News: The Strokes are returning to Australia in 2027

The Strokes bring their Reality Awaits tour to Australia in February 2027 for four shows, kicking off at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Saturday, February 13. They then head to Melbourne for two nights at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday, February 16 and Wednesday, February 17, before wrapping up with a huge Sydney Summertime show at Centennial Park on Saturday, February 20.

That Sydney date comes with a formidable supporting cast. The inaugural Sydney Summertime sees The Strokes joined by Beck, Courtney Barnett and Promiseland. Grammy Award winner Beck returns after a four-decade career that has made him a longstanding favourite with Australian audiences, while Courtney Barnett steps back into the spotlight with new album Creature of Habit. Opening the bill is Promiseland, the high-energy project of Johann Rashid, whose connection to The Strokes runs particularly close through his signing to Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records. Courtney Barnett and Promiseland are also confirmed as special guests for the Brisbane and Melbourne shows.

Formed in New York in 1998, The Strokes changed the temperature of guitar music with their 2001 debut Is This It. Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond Jr., Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti arrived with a sound that was lean, immediate and seemingly effortless, with songs including ‘Last Nite’, ‘Someday’ and ‘Hard to Explain’ quickly becoming embedded in a new generation of indie rock.

More than two decades later, their influence remains difficult to miss. Across six studio albums, The Strokes have repeatedly shifted the edges of the sound that first made them famous, culminating most recently with 2020’s The New Abnormal. Backseat Mafia caught the Strokes in Adelaide when they played a one-off as part of the Harvest Festival last year.

The Australian dates will give fans another chance to hear a catalogue that now stretches across more than 25 years, from the wiry rush of Is This It and Room on Fire through to the broader palette of their later records.
