News: What So Not and Buunshin Unite for New EP The Quiet That Hurts

Two of electronic music’s most adventurous minds — Australian producer What So Not and Dutch innovator Buunshin— are joining forces for a new collaborative EP, The Quiet That Hurts, due out Friday 5 December. The project follows last month’s single Threads (featuring Maiah Manser) and arrives this week alongside a luminous new cut, Dancing In The Leaves, featuring Lucy Lucy.

Built around Lucy Lucy’s gossamer vocals and a blend of driving beats and ethereal ambience, Dancing In The Leaves embodies the dual energy of the record — equal parts emotional reflection and pure sonic release. Across the EP’s five tracks, the pair explore themes of silence, vulnerability, and creative rebirth, moving between the rhythmic pulse of Tragic(featuring Alina Pash) and the drum and bass euphoria of The One (featuring Aiko). The record closes with Mara Necia, a piece that merges narcotic beats with haunting introspection.

What So Not describes the concept behind The Quiet That Hurts as a meditation on creative silence:

“I came up with this idea of the ‘Void’ — the negative space you must enter to draw down ideas from the universe in their purest form. We fill our lives with unnecessary noise, trying to escape that silence… but that’s where the answers lie.”

The collaboration grew from that shared idea, uniting two artists who push at the edges of electronic music. Emerging in the 2010s, What So Not has built a reputation for genre-defying production — blending trap, bass, and melody into a distinctive global sound. His collaborations span Skrillex, RL Grime, Killer Mike, and even Toto, while live sets at Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Falls Festival have earned him acclaim as one of Australia’s most forward-thinking artists.

Meanwhile, Buunshin — the Dutch producer who rose from the drum & bass underground — has carved his own path through rule-breaking innovation. Supported by heavyweights like Flume, Apashe, and NOISIA, he’s quickly evolved into one of the scene’s most respected names, blending technical precision with emotional weight.

To celebrate the release, What So Not will headline Perth’s Ice Cream Factory on Friday 28 December, hosting a stacked lineup featuring Hermitude, Charlotte Plank, and Buunshin, who will bring his signature sonic assault to Australian audiences once more.

Dancing In The Leaves is out now. The Quiet That Hurts lands Friday 5 December via all major platforms.
