With less than five weeks to go until Rock N Roll Circus returns to Sheffield, organisers have revealed fresh details of what promises to be the festival’s biggest and most exciting city edition yet.
Returning to Don Valley Bowl from Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August, Bank Holiday Weekend, the award-winning event will bring together around 40 live artists and 40 circus acts, transforming the heart of South Yorkshire into one of Britain’s most distinctive destinations for live music, immersive entertainment and contemporary circus.
Now firmly established as one of Sheffield’s standout annual events, Rock N Roll Circus returns with an expanded festival experience, an upgraded VIP offering, a new GA+ area and four unforgettable days celebrating the city that helped shape its identity.
At the centre of it all is the festival’s iconic Big Top.
Rather than watching headline artists from the far reaches of a festival field, audiences experience every major performance beneath canvas, creating an atmosphere that combines the energy of an arena show with the intimacy of a theatre production.
This year’s programme opens with a celebration of one of British indie’s defining records as The Kooks perform Inside In / Inside Out in full to mark its 20th anniversary, joined by Sheffield heroes Milburn, celebrating Well, Well, Well in full, and indie favourite Miles Kane.
Friday belongs to The Streets, whose performance of A Grand Don’t Come For Free in full promises to be one of the defining live shows of the Bank Holiday weekend.
Saturday sees one of the UK’s most exciting bands, Wunderhorse, headline what is currently expected to be their only outdoor headline show of the summer, joined by Baxter Dury, English Teacher, Fat Dog and one of the strongest supporting line-ups anywhere in the country.
The weekend reaches its finale on Sunday as Richard Ashcroft, fresh from his acclaimed stadium performances supporting Oasis, brings a greatest hits set to Don Valley Bowl alongside The Fratellis, Cast, fresh from their international tour with Oasis, and Yorkshire favourites Embrace.
Across the weekend, Rock N Roll Circus continues to champion the next generation of British music with the same passion it gives established headliners.
The BBC Introducing Stage once again provides a platform for emerging artists from Sheffield, Yorkshire and beyond, sitting alongside a packed programme of breakthrough acts performing across the festival.
Artists including The Molotovs, Gurriers, Basht., Bleech 9:3, The North, The Clause, Day We Ran, Heidi Curtis, Goo, Sundress, Tidetied and Sonni Mills underline the festival’s commitment to discovering tomorrow’s headline acts.
That story continues through a new generation of musicians carrying forward some of Britain’s most celebrated musical legacies.
Festivalgoers will see Cruz Beckham and The Breakers make one of the band’s biggest festival appearances to date, while Spanish Horses, featuring guitarist Albert Cocker, son of Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, and Villanelle, fronted by Gene Gallagher, demonstrate how British guitar music continues to evolve through a new generation of artists.
Beyond the music, Rock N Roll Circus continues to offer an experience unlike anything else on the festival calendar.
More than 40 circus performers will fill the site throughout the weekend, with aerialists, acrobats, stilt walkers, fire performers and roaming theatrical characters ensuring the entertainment never stops between headline sets.
Returning for another year is internationally acclaimed high-wire performer Ellis Grover, who has been part of the Rock N Roll Circus family since the very beginning and now tours with Gary Barlow and Take That, while Sheffield audiences will also be treated to remarkable performances from one of the city’s own world-class unicycle artists.
Towering above it all will be the festival’s spectacular life-sized mechanical elephant, roaming the site as part of an immersive circus programme that continues to blur the line between festival and theatre.
Food and drink remains another defining part of the Rock N Roll Circus experience, with organisers bringing together some of Yorkshire’s best independent traders alongside award-winning street food from across the UK.
Festivalgoers can expect everything from the legendary Yorkshire Burrito to acclaimed local favourites Unit Burger, authentic Greek Street Food, and indulgent creations from God Save The Toasties, alongside independent bars, expanded hospitality spaces and upgraded premium experiences that have become a hallmark of the festival.
Rock N Roll Circus also continues to rethink the traditional festival format.
With gates opening from 4pm on Thursday and 3pm on Friday, fans can head straight from work into an evening of live music, while carefully curated scheduling means audiences never have to miss one headline act because another artist is playing elsewhere.
