Every friendship has a ritual that keeps it alive long after the everyday closeness has gone. For Melbourne singer-songwriter Tig, it’s the queue for the Meredith Eye, the Ferris wheel that turns above the Supernatural Amphitheatre at Meredith and Golden Plains. ‘Ferris Wheel’, premiering today on Backseat Mafia, is about that annual meeting point. It’s about two people who have drifted further apart than either wants to admit, and who climb into the same gondola each year hoping the view still looks the same.
It also opens a door. ‘Ferris Wheel’ arrives alongside the announcement of Tig’s debut album, ‘It’s Time We Met’, out through AWAL on Friday, 26 February 2027.
The song gets its power from small admissions. It opens with a white lie, pretending to know a song a friend has shared because we don’t talk like we used to anymore, and later finds the narrator waiting alone at the beach while the other person stays home in the city, unaware. Those are the moments when keep it light ’til they fasten us in / and then I’ll tell you everything stops being a chorus and becomes a plan for survival.
Tig wrote it alone at her keyboard, and it came out almost whole.
It was one of those songs that just poured out of me and remained unchanged. I would play it solo, just me and my keyboard, but in my head I knew it was bigger, louder.
ARIA-nominated producer Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy) heard the same thing. He added guitar and synths, with Hannes Lackmann on drums, and lifted the song from a private confession into something widescreen and weightless without losing its bare-room intimacy.
A soft organ base and pattering drums starts the track before Tig’s golden mellifluous vocals enter, steeped with a delicious melancholia and aching with yearning and regret. A chorus enters like a storm in the quiet picking up the pace. The song shimmers and glitters like sunlight on water, quickiening theolsue, becoming a soraing anthem.
It’s a song Tig is unusually protective of.
Usually my songs have a big backstory, layers of meaning and hidden codes, but this one is different. For once I just put it all in the track. Everything you need to know and feel is written in there, and I fear anything I say now might break its magic somehow.
‘Ferris Wheel’ extends a strong run. Tig was named a Top 10 Global Emerging Songwriter in the 2026 Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. Her previous single, ‘Alice Says’, reached No. 1 on the AMRAP Indie/Alternative chart and No. 6 nationally, and it was followed by the hushed, minimalist ‘Morning Pages’. Her 2024 debut EP Inside Voices, co-produced with Jono Steer, sold out hometown headline shows and led to supports with Pierce Brothers, Kim Churchill and Ainslie Wills.
You can hear Phoebe Bridgers, Sharon Van Etten and Tommy Lefroy in her lineage. ‘Ferris Wheel’ suggests she’s working towards a sound of her own: folk-pop that understands the hardest things to say are often the ones that matter most.
