Sometimes, as much as I love music, the way things look is the thing that makes them beautiful. When I was at University I had a poster of (this might seem a little sad) Edvard Munch‘s The Scream. To me it was scary and comical and cool and meaningful and, well, just brilliant. He himself described his inspiration thus,
One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The colour shrieked. This became The Scream
We’ve been salivating and fawning over the new Editors album since we heard it, and on September 2nd the band drops their new single Formaldehyde. Although it’s dark, anthemic, emotion packed indie-rock (as you would expect) it’s actually quite an uplifting song. There’s no scream passing through nature here, more a warm wave of (dare I say it) optimism.
What does separate this song from that others though, is its video. It’s directed by Ben Weatley, the acclaimed film director of Kill List and A field in England fame, and it’s his first pop video, because he came through the route of advertising and internet, rather than the path more heavily trodden of conjuring music videos. And he’s rather gone to town on this one, filming it in Almeria, Spain that blends together Westerns (it’s shot on the set used by Sergio Leone for Once upon a time in the west) and Surrealism, and Horror, and even Suspense.
It’s a Scream you might say. And by that of course, I mean I found it scary and comical and cool and meaningful and, well, just brilliant. Edvard would have been proud.
