Single review: Hunting Season – Newton Faulkner (feat. Lissie & Los Bitchos)

Newton Faulkner’s new single Hunting Season, builds on his recent work, exploring sound and texture in his music to produce some ground-breaking stuff.

On the face of it, there’s a lot going on in this collaboration. Three artists that have very distinctive sounds and rhythm to their output, but what we get is a perfect blend newly created by old friends. Faulkner wrote a version of the song, but didn’t love where it had got to, so called on Nic Crawshaw, drummer for Los Bitchos, to change things up. Crawshaw and Faulkner were old band mates and the musical chemistry is clearly still there. Bringing in Serra Petale (Los Bitchos guitarist) the track began to take on a new life, with all of Faulkner’s guitar being replaced by the Aussie’s reverb-laden strings.

The result is a summery, rhythmical feast that carries you along on a feel-good wave. Adding in long-time collaborator Lissie’s smoky vocals delivers greater texture and contrast in the pre-chorus, before the hooky, upbeat centre of the song comes through.

It’s reflective of Faulkner’s latest vibe, which is to some extent, a continual zig-zag to make something unique. This track embodies that – joyful, free and a chorus you just have to dance to.

Hunting Season is out now on all streaming platforms, and Newton Faulkner is on tour around the UK in October 2025.
