Fresh from reviving a rain-soaked crowd at Harvest Rock Festival in Adelaide, Genesis Owusu has dropped his latest single, “DEATH CULT ZOMBIE”, just in time for Halloween. The Ghanaian-Australian artist has built a reputation for commanding stages with both swagger and precision — and the new track carries that same restless energy into the studio.

Driven by a gritty, head-banging bassline“DEATH CULT ZOMBIE” is a sharp turn from the electronic-punk pulse of his recent single “PIRATE RADIO.” There’s a sinister edge here, with Owusu exploring themes of indoctrination and collective delusion — a lyrical play on modern zombification that lands perfectly on the spookiest day of the year.

Released via OURNESS, the track extends Owusu’s hot streak following “PIRATE RADIO”, which topped triple j’s Most Played list and drew attention from BBC Radio 1KCRW, and SiriusXMU. In classic Owusu style, he’s matched the release with community-driven gestures — from visiting fans’ homes in Canberra to playing rounds of UNO with listeners in Sydney and Melbourne — reminding us that beneath the sharp satire, there’s connection at the core.

Owusu’s creative arc has been nothing short of staggering. Since his 2021 debut Smiling With No Teeth, which redefined Australian music with its fusion of funk, punk and hip-hop, he’s earned seven ARIA Awards, a #4 ARIA-charting sophomore album (STRUGGLER), and sold-out orchestral shows at the Sydney Opera House. On stage, he’s shared bills with Tame ImpalaParamore, and Bloc Party, and dominated festival circuits from Splendour in the Grass to Primavera Sound.

If “DEATH CULT ZOMBIE” is any sign of what’s to come, Owusu’s next chapter looks ready to feed on convention itself.
