Track: Jen Cloher Releases New Track ‘My Witch’ off Upcoming Album

Jen Cloher

Jen Cloher has just released a new single, ‘My Witch’, from their forthcoming fifth album ‘I Am The River, The River Is Me’ which will be released on Friday, 3rd March 2023 via Milk! / Remote Control Records.

‘My Witch’ has an accompanying video, directed by Triana Hernandez. Cloher has also announced an Australian tour taking in Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Anglesea, Melbourne and Sydney this May.

Cloher drew on an experience she had in a friend’s portable cedar spa as inspiration for the video.

I went to a party in 2022 where a friend had hired a portable cedar spa. They had set it up in the backyard and after a big feast people started to pile in. As the night progressed things became more and more debauched, bodies tangled together, laughter and booze, like a Bacchanalian scene in a forest… cut to 6 months later when I’m trying to think of a way to tell a funny (but sexy) story to accompany My Witch. I had been attending Pony Club Gym in Preston for a couple of years and I thought it would make the perfect setting for a pair of babes to be flirting during a steamy workout.

Cloher cast Georgia Mac as the workout partner who eventually lures them into her coven. The other witches in the spa are played by Mo’Ju, Kira Puru, Alice Skye and Lay the Mystic, who all end up indulging in watermelon, accompanied by a scorching guitar solo that marks the climax of the song. Watching the video, I can’t help but remember the immortal lyrics sung by Ella Fitzgerald, in the song by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, Cloher might be bewitched, but she’s not bothered or bewildered!

‘My Witch’ is the third song to be released off the upcoming album. Previous tracks to be dropped have been ‘Mana Takatāpui’ and ‘Being Human‘. If these singles are anything to go by, ‘I Am The River, The River Is Me’ is set to be a classic.

  1. […] The songs on this album are diverse and showcase Cloher’s range as a songwriter from the achingly beautiful combination of nostalgia and melancholy of ‘I am coming Home’ to tracks such as ‘The Wild’ which has some great vocals (Kylie Auldist) reminiscent of those of Clare Torry on Pink Floyd’s ‘Great Gig in the Sky’ to full-on rockers (‘Being Human’) and the sexy, sapphic ‘My Witch‘.
