For more than two decades, Jess Macc has existed just outside the centre of the frame, documenting Australian music culture from backstage corridors, photo pits and studio sessions. Her camera has followed artists including Kasey Chambers, The Veronicas, Troy Cassar-Daley and Casey Donovan, while her broader creative work has stretched across filmmaking, podcasts and artist development.
Now she’s stepping into view herself.
MACC’s debut album SEX, MEDS & THERAPY, released today, doesn’t arrive with the energy of a newcomer trying to introduce herself. Instead, it feels like the sound of someone who has spent years quietly absorbing the emotional debris of the music industry before finally deciding to speak in her own voice.
Produced by Daniel Natoli across A Sharp Recording Studio and Kiln Studios, the eleven-track record moves between alt-country grit, indie-rock catharsis and stripped-back singer-songwriter confessionals. Across songs shaped by addiction, intimacy, vulnerability and resilience, MACC sounds less interested in polished reinvention than honest excavation.
Previous singles ‘CHEMISTRY’, ‘TROUBLED WATERS’ and ‘LOVER’ have already hinted at the emotional directness running through the project revealing an artist comfortable sitting inside discomfort rather than smoothing it away.
Outside music, MACC has continued building a wider creative ecosystem through projects including Mookie, the Macc n Cheese podcast and Outside In, a mental health podcast series for Support Act. But this album shifts the focus inward for perhaps the first time in her career.
For years, Jess Macc helped frame Australian music from behind the lens. SEX, MEDS & THERAPY marks the moment she finally steps fully into the picture herself.
