Midnight Ambulance have released their new single ‘Stained Cotton‘, and an accompanying animated video made in collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art student Xiaoyan Liu. The track continues Midnight Ambulance’s ability to create powerful and emotive soundscapes. Amelia (drums/vocals) and Fraser (guitars/vocals) began collaborating during lockdown and the drama, turmoil of that time seeps into their music. The quality of the vocal is enhanced here with various parts layering over each other.

The band expand on the themes behind the track:
“‘Stained Cotton’ is a folk and surrealism-inspired exploration of the double standards of and sexism towards women in British society. Written last year during the heightened coverage of misogyny and violence towards women in the media, the song describes the unjust, oppressed and vulnerable position many women are forced into.”

The song was recorded with Paul Winton (LaFontains, Fatherson, American Clay) at North Road Studios using vintage equipment, which gives the track the raw honesty and emotion felt when written. The artwork, created by Ritchie Collins, depicts Scottish landscapes seen from the duo’s writing studio. Ritchie’s style combines Scottish influences with a unique magical quality, blurring the lines between reality and the musical world. Absolutely perfect for the world Midnight Ambulance inhabit.
