Track: The Petrov Affair make a welcome return with the silken melancholy of ‘White Out’, with launch date announced.

There is a crystalline delicacy to the new single ‘White Out’ from the enigmatic The Petrov Affair who make a welcome return after an absence of a few years.

The track is threaded with a poignant melancholy but a soaring chorus bursts through like a ray of sunshine through the clouds. Indeed there is an Antarctic chill to the delivery that reflects its genesis. The band says:

The track was recorded in a deserted lodge in the Australian snow country. Its production and atmosphere reflect the environment in which it was written and recorded, as do the vaguely humorous lyrics about the end of a frosty relationship.

The lyrics reveal this bittersweet tone:

You left me standing in the rain, again
Like some old line its so clichéd, and played
me like and instrument,
in some icy hut deep in the snow

A delicacy pervades the track like fingers of ice on a window pane, yearning and filled with regret, and the frosty air is captured in a single take video driving in an isolated part of Japan:

‘White Out’ is out now and can be streamed and downloaded via the link below.

Another product of the Marrickville Sound I go on about ad infinitum? I think so.

The Petrov Affair is a four-piece avant-pop / experimental / indie band from Sydney’s Inner West.
Originally the two-piece affair of Murray Lee (Vox, keys, bass, production) and Bruce Thomas (guitar,
BVs, bass), the band now also features bass player Ian Empson, and drummer Dallas Rogers.

You can catch the band launching ‘White Out’ on 31 May at the legendary Petersham Bowling Club, supports from Golden Fang (another of our favourites) and the Urban Cartel. It will be the live debut of the four-piece Petrov Affair. Tickets via here.

For those who were wondering, the Petrov Affair was a real incident in Australia during the Cold War involving all sorts of spying and Russian operatives. More here.
