Track: Thrillhouse kick starts the year with the effervescent ‘Janus’.

I feel that my musical year doesn’t really start until I’ve received Thrillhouse latest offering. And their opening salvo for the year is the appropriately named single ‘Janus’, the Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces and is where the name for the month of January comes from. In Thrillhouse’s typically contrary nature, the single is delivered in February but it certainly represents a very nice beginning to the year, with the band hinting that there is an album on the way.

‘Janus’ features a very stirring horn section that carves its way into what is a wild ride from the band: cantering along at pace and with the verve and insanity we expect. The sardonic, wry delivery skips over a stabbing instrumentation that recalls Bowie ‘Modern Love’ with its carousing choruses and a Stax Records swing and soul.

It’s appropriate that this should be released in the same week as the Sea Power album: the bands have a lot in common with their energy, innovation and an irreverent sense of bucolic fun. Available in all the usual sites and here.
