Eora/Sydney-based alternative-pop artist Sarah Yagki has released a new single ‘Just Like Me’ – produced by Yianni Adams (Kyoshi) and mixed by James Guido (LAU, Jordan Fuller). The track comes with an accompanying video that was created entirely by a female lead team and cast. Yagki released another single, ‘Alone’ in May.

Yagki has spoken about the circumstances that resulted in her writing ‘Just Like Me’.

“‘Just Like Me’ recounts the unravelling of the day I watched someone I loved, hurt themselves in a manic episode. I walked into that situation without knowing what was happening, and I watched that person hurt themselves in front of me, whilst blaming me for it. The single is about watching a loved one suffer through their lowest points of mental health, and the impact it has on you as you watch it unfold.”

‘Just Like Me’ showcases Yagki’s ethereal voice which soars above the melody, warm with empathy and feeling. The lyrics bravely address the trauma of observing someone dealing with mental illness, as the song builds to an intense climax.

The video stars Yagki and dancer Marcya Fugawai, and explores the evolution of the characters’ relationship. The mini movie cleverly contrasts the stark bathroom scenes with the rest of the set (inspired by Euphoria,) in which the the duo first connect and then fall apart.

“The director and I drew metaphoric representations from my own personal experiences, to echo the distress of watching someone I once knew, try to take their own life away, and bring me down in it.”

Yagki is making a name for herself with previous releases being widely embraced by triple j Unearthed and Australian community radio stations FBi Radio, 4ZZZ, SYN Media, 2RRR, 2SER, and others. Her tracks have been supported by the likes of The Music, TONE DEAF, The AU Review, Cool Accidents, Music Feeds, LivewireAU, AAA Backstage and Something You Said. Yagki has also had multiple videos added to MTV Upload.
