effe is formerly one half of Brisbane pop duo WIIGZ and the nom de plume for Naarm/Melbourne based alternative pop artist and producer Hannah Brydon. Her debut single ‘Chokehold’ has just been released and it’s a dreamy psych-infused joy that swirls and floats through the ether with a pop brilliance.

There is undeniably a shoegaze dream pop influence detectable that bears the fingerprints of the co-producer and co-writer Joe Agius (RINSE, Hatchie), but the velvet, distant vocals and the indelible melodies that permeate the track indicate a prodigious talent. A shimmering electronica in the instrumentation creates a kaleidoscope of sonic colours that is hypnotic, dealing with themes of obsession and devotion in a deliciously languorous way.

The accompanying video is a late night performance piece that captures the sinuous feel of the music as if shot by Nicolas Winding Refn:

‘Chokehold’ is out now and available to download and stream here and through the link below.

effe is launching the single with her live debut on Friday, March 28 at Punters Club as part of Kennel District, a new monthly live music and DJ night presented by I Oh You Records. To add to the enticement, it is free entry and features a DJs set by Armlock & RINSE.

In the meantime, by way of an introduction to this rising talent, effe has put together a fascinating and intriguing list of her ten favourite things exclusively for Backseat Mafia.
