Live Review: Psychedelic Furs. Stylus, Leeds 25.10.25

Walking into a sold-out night at Stylus, Leeds, the crowd, almost a thousand strong, were fizzing with expectation. The Psychedelic Furs took the stage to a rapturous welcome and from the first note of Heaven through to the closing strains of India, this was a band that knew exactly why they’re still here and why the crowd was still here for them.

The room was packed, hot but with an electric atmosphere. The crowd weren’t just there to watch nostalgia, they were there to feel it. Leeds University’s Stylus may be a student venue in name, but tonight it felt every bit like a a home of post-punk memory, buzzing with current-day relevance.

Front and centre, Richard Butler strode about, big in theatrical posture, full of classic moves but not a mere museum piece. His voice still held the edge, that sardonic flavour. He paused, he posed, he reached into the audience with a curl of his lip, and you knew he meant it. Meanwhile his brother, Tim Butler on bass coolly locked into the groove. While Richard was the theatrical flare, Tim was the steady under-current. Especially during songs like President Gas and No One, you could feel that bass holding the room together with Zack Alford on the drums.

Guitar and keys chimed and bit when needed; the rhythm section ripped into Run and Run with the sort of compelling joy you don’t always see from older acts in small rooms. It felt vital, not like a retrospective.

Love My Way, enjoying a more recent lease of life from socials and video games and the wonderful Pretty in Pink garnered the biggest reactions, although the crowd of aficionados were not standing and waiting just for these songs. They knew the songs, echoed back every chorus, and yet you sensed they were also discovering the songs afresh in the live moment. At nearly 1000 people, the room still managed to feel intimate enough that you weren’t lost in a crowd, you were part of a collective.

If you asked me to pick one image: Richard standing mid-stage, one arm raised, eyes half-closed as Love My Way swelled, while the crowd raised theirs in response – that sums it up. The band both looked back and looked forward, and the room lap it up.

It was a show that reminded you why The Psychedelic Furs still matter. Raw enough to thrill, polished enough to satisfy, full of heart and swagger. Leeds got its night, and I suspect many in the room will keep talking about it for a while to come.
