Thirty-plus years, a handful of gigs, a stack of 4-track cassettes and 7″s scattered across compilations — and only now, with ‘When You Smiled And Turned Away’, do The Cat’s Miaow get around to a debut studio album. It’s a delightfully absurd piece of timing for a band this good, and also entirely fitting: proof, if any more were needed, that creativity does not have a use-by date.
The title track, out now, does what The Cat’s Miaow have always done best: it takes something small — the first spark of noticing someone, the moment before anything is said — and holds it up to the light without over-explaining it. Bart Cummings and Andrew Withycombe’s songwriting stays minimal almost to the point of restraint, Cameron Smith’s brushed drums keep everything unhurried rather than propulsive, and Kerrie Bolton’s soprano vocal does the emotional work the arrangement declines to do itself. It’s a song built on absence as much as presence, which is very on-brand for a band whose entire live history could be counted on one hand.
Listeners who grew up on the C86 cassette and its extended family — the Sarah Records roster, Talulah Gosh, The Field Mice, all that scratchy, unguarded jangle — will recognise the DNA immediately: unpolished, unafraid of being small, more interested in feeling true than sounding accomplished. But there’s a clear line, too, to Belle and Sebastian’s early records, where hushed vocals and unresolved narratives did more emotional heavy lifting than any chorus could. The Cat’s Miaow arrived at that same hushed, literary intimacy independently, from the other side of the world, at roughly the same time — which is part of why the current reappraisal of their catalogue (via A Colourful Storm’s compilation and the two World of Echo retrospectives) feels less like nostalgia and more like overdue recognition.
Locally, they sit naturally alongside Even As We Speak, fellow travellers in that same understated Sydney/Melbourne indie-pop thread of the ’90s — bands who treated melancholy as a texture rather than a mood to wallow in, and who never mistook volume for intensity. Hearing The Cat’s Miaow return with new material in 2026 makes that whole lineage feel current again rather than archival.

Fourteen songs, just over half an hour — the band, true to form, aren’t about to overstay their welcome. Themes of yearning, regret and quiet self-discovery run through titles like ‘I Hope My Dreams Will Reach You’ and ‘If You’re Lost, You Can Follow Me Home,’ with Andrew Withycombe handling production himself and Kerrie Bolton providing the cover art — a DIY approach that suits a band who’ve never needed anyone else’s hands on the wheel.
