Office Dog are proof New Zealand still punches above its weight musically in the company of extraordinary bands like Fazerdaze and Ringlets, all inextricably linked to the legendary label Flying Nun Records which has been at the forefront of antipodean musical creativity since the eighties.
Following on from their 2024 debut ‘Spiel’, the band have today announced their sophomore album ‘Prime Corner’ set for release on 19 June, and unveil the cool new single ‘Gold Things’ as a taster.
It’s a melodic fuzzy anthem, filled with a louche insouciance, soaring melodies and a poetic romanticism:
Grabs your name
Takes your hand
The top of the cue
I think I’ve never touched the ground
I’ve been waiting for you
Gold thing
Gold thing
There’s a little Dinosaur Jnr, a little Smashing Pumpkins and a whole lot of the classic Dunedin sound exemplified by The Clean and The Bats. Lyricist and front person Kane Strang says:
This song is about getting what you’ve wanted, or reaching a place you’ve seen off in the distance for a long time.
The accompanying video is a live performance of the band illustrating their dynamism and enigmatic presence:
