Last year’s album ‘Breaking Into Heaven’ from Gold Coast (Yugambeh/Kombumerri)-based six-piece Selve was one of the highlights of the year (see my review here). And it is good news indeed that they today announce a follow up EP, amusingly called ‘Breaking Outta Heaven’ die for release on Friday, 19 June. It comes ahead of an extensive tour across Europe and the UK.
To give us a taste of what’s to come, the single ‘Desire’ is unleashed today and the indocations are, last year’s release was not a blip.
‘Desire’ delivers a sonic punch – something Selve are very adept at. It’s a funky jittery number with that undercurrent of licentiousness and fun that typifies the band’s louche approach:
Forbidden lover
I’m coming to get ya
They all wanna steal that
Holy fire from ya
Enigmatic front man Loki Liddle says of the track:
‘Desire’ is an absolute favourite of ours, we play it at almost every gig despite it not being on [Breaking Into Heaven] and it’s often a crowd favourite. It rocks, it is really fun, and it is basically just about that fire that gets you going out there in the world – fighting for what you value and believe in, fighting to bring a dream to life, or maybe giving absolutely everything for the person you love. Far from being the root of all suffering, desire is life force and the fire of the spirit. I hope ‘Desire‘ gives people full permission to drop into their highest frequency and just fucking go for it. Chase your dreams despite your parents concern, ask that cute person out on a date, be who you are loudly and proudly and be willing to burn the hedges of the maze down on your way to your answer.
Directed by Joshua Tate, the accompanying video captures the dynamism of the band, replete with Liddle in a very fetching pair of Boxer’s shorts:
The usual hyperkinetic performance matches the sonic punches of the track. Selve are back in the ring and it’s another knockout performance. ‘Desire’ is out now throuigh Community Music and available to download and stream here.
The new EP is a companion piece to last year’s album. Liddle says of it:
…we broke into heaven – [which] may indeed just be a big old trap we’ll need to wrestle our way out of in the end
