News: Geordie Greep brings debut solo album The New Sound to Australia

Geordie Greep is heading to Australia this July and August, bringing his debut solo album The New Sound to local stages for the first time. Best known as the unpredictable focal point of Black Midi, Greep now steps further into his own orbit with a record that widens the possibilities rather than narrowing them.

The New Sound thrives on the absence of boundaries. Built with more than thirty session musicians across two continents, the album stretches from Brazil to Europe, with half of it recorded alongside Brazilian players responding only to demos, unaware of Greep’s previous work. That distance from expectation appears central to the project’s appeal.

Musically, the record moves with deliberate instability. The title track cuts between jazz-funk swagger and theatrical flourish, while other songs shift suddenly from intimate murmurs to full-band eruptions. Echoes of Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra and Scott Walker drift through the margins, though nothing stays fixed long enough to become imitation.

Lyrically, Greep acts as ringmaster for a cast of unreliable figures moving through cafes, bars, rented rooms and cabaret spaces where fantasy and reality continuously overlap. Characters cling to control even as their worlds slide sideways beneath them. It gives the album a strange dramatic pulse, part satire, part fever dream.

That unpredictability extends naturally to the stage. Greep has already made clear that working with different musicians in different places remains central to the project, suggesting each performance will carry its own shape rather than follow a rigid script.

For Australian audiences, these July and August dates offer a first look at one of the more singular debut records of the year brought into a live setting. If The New Sound is any guide, expect movement, precision and glorious instability in equal measure.
