Canadian singer-songwriter Heather Ferguson marks a significant moment in her artistic journey with the release of her new single, ‘Broken Horned Kudu’. Rooted in jazz but shaped by an expansive, cross-cultural approach, the track emerges from a collaboration with leading South African musicians in Cape Town, weaving together elements of Cape Jazz, world jazz, and contemporary vocal storytelling into a deeply expressive and globally resonant work.

The song draws inspiration from Ferguson’s travels across East and Southern Africa, where encounters with both beauty and hardship informed its emotional core. Using the image of a kudu with a broken horn as its central metaphor, ‘Broken Horned Kudu’ reflects on resilience in the face of adversity, and the fragile balance between survival and circumstance. Sung in both English and Xhosa, the track emphasizes not only narrative depth but also the importance of shared musical language, allowing cultural perspectives to meet and merge organically within the composition.

Recorded in Cape Town under the direction of South African jazz pianist and arranger George Werner, the sessions brought together a dynamic ensemble of musicians whose contributions shape the recording’s rich sonic landscape. From the lyrical trumpet lines of Muneeb Hermans to the rhythmic foundation laid by bassist Wesley Rustin and drummer Kevin Gibson, the track carries the hallmarks of Cape Jazz tradition while maintaining a spacious, contemporary feel. Xhosa vocalist Esihle Valela adds a vital dimension, grounding the song in local expression and deepening its emotional resonance.

Post-production took place in Victoria, British Columbia, with Canadian producer Wynn Gogol, creating a transcontinental dialogue that remained integral to the track’s development. This back-and-forth process ensured that the collaboration retained its authenticity while achieving a cohesive final sound, bridging geographic distance through a shared creative vision.

For Ferguson, the song represents more than a musical exploration; it is a reflection on the complexities of human resilience. “Broken Horned Kudu became a way to talk about resilience and the will to survive, even when that resilience is compromised by desperate choices,” she explains. “Despite that, we find hope. In Xhosa, they say “Kuzolunga” — it will all be fine.”

That sense of hope, tempered by realism, runs throughout the single. Musically, it leans into the ensemble-driven nature of Cape Jazz, allowing space for each instrument to speak while contributing to a unified whole. The result is a recording that feels both intimate and expansive, rooted in personal storytelling yet reflective of broader social and cultural themes.

The release signals an evolution in Ferguson’s work, expanding her jazz foundations through international collaboration and lived experience. Known for exploring themes of loss, power, and resilience, she continues to draw from literature, travel, and human connection to inform her songwriting, creating music that resonates beyond borders.

‘Broken Horned Kudu’ stands as a compelling example of jazz as a global language, one that transcends geography while remaining deeply connected to place. Through its careful balance of narrative, collaboration, and musical tradition, the single offers a thoughtful and moving listening experience, underscoring the enduring power of cross-cultural exchange in contemporary music.
