Ecca Vandal has spent her career ripping labels off things and setting fire to the packaging. Fresh from a ferocious debut at Coachella, the Melbourne-based shape-shifter will join Deftones on their Australian run as momentum builds toward her forthcoming album Looking for People to Unfollow, which is due out on 22 May.
At Coachella, Vandal delivered one of the festival’s most high-voltage sets, tearing through fan favourites while reminding a global audience why she has become such a formidable live proposition. Now comes the roadwork. Vandal is set to open Deftones’ Australian arena tour alongside Interpol, a bill that feels custom-built for her refusal to stay in one lane.
Recent single MOLLY, the video of which was directed with longtime visual collaborator Richie Buxton and filmed in Ballarat, hinted at the emotional complexity of the next chapter. Vandal described the song as balancing surface chaos with something quieter underneath: damage, recovery and the slow work of rebuilding yourself.
Earlier this month, Ecca Vandal dropped her newest single SORRY! CRASH! built on jagged rhythm shifts, distorted electronics and Vandal’s trademark mix of bite and control, the track channels overload into something thrillingly combustible. If this is the shape of the new era, we cannot wait to see her bring that energy to Australia when she joins Deftones on their upcoming run.
