Empire of the Sun are bringing their technicolour universe back home, announcing their biggest Australian and New Zealand tour yet for February and March 2027. The six-date ‘Ask That God: Afterlife Tour’ takes Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore’s project into some sizeable rooms, including Sydney’s Afterpay Arena and Perth’s RAC Arena.
The run begins at Auckland’s Spark Arena on February 19 before crossing the Tasman for Brisbane’s Riverstage on February 21. Sydney follows at Afterpay Arena on February 25, with Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl on February 27, Adelaide Entertainment Centre on March 2 and a final homecoming show at RAC Arena in Perth on March 6.
‘Afterlife’ is being billed as the final live chapter of the ‘Ask That God’ era, taking the world created around the 2024 album and rebuilding it on a larger scale. The tour has already sold more than 400,000 tickets worldwide, and the new production promises another expansion of the costumes, colour and surreal theatricality that have become as much a part of Empire of the Sun as the music itself.
It has been a remarkable journey from 2008 debut ‘Walking on a Dream’. Its title track and ‘We Are the People’ pushed the Australian duo onto the international stage, while subsequent albums ‘Ice on the Dune’ and ‘Two Vines’ produced tracks including ‘Alive’, ‘DNA’ and ‘High and Low’. Along the way came major festival appearances at Coachella, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.
After an eight-year gap between albums, ‘Ask That God’ arrived in 2024 and began a new phase for the duo, led by ‘Changes’, ‘Music on the Radio’ and ‘Cherry Blossom’. The numbers behind their career are now substantial: more than five million albums sold, six billion streams and eight ARIA Awards, with ‘Walking on a Dream’ achieving triple Platinum status in Australia.
Australian audiences last entered this particular world on the 2024 ‘Ask That God Tour’. Three years later, Empire of the Sun are returning with a show designed to push the visual side even further. For a band that has spent nearly two decades making pop music look like it arrived from another planet, an ‘Afterlife’ seems a suitably strange place to go next.
