Melbourne’s newest winter music festival is rapidly becoming one of the city’s most ambitious celebrations of independent music. High Ground has unveiled the second wave of artists for its inaugural program, adding Egyptian-Australian producer Moktar, Sydney electronic favourites Cosmo’s Midnight, Winston Surfshirt and Kirin J Callinan to a lineup already spanning post-punk, electronic music, jazz, soul and experimental sounds.
Taking place across Fitzroy institutions The Night Cat, The Evelyn and Punters Club, High Ground draws inspiration from Fitzroy’s traditional name, Ngár-go, embracing the suburb’s long-standing identity as a hub of creative independence and artistic resistance. Running through to the end of August, the multi-venue festival aims to celebrate the area’s rich musical heritage while reaffirming its place at the forefront of Australia’s contemporary underground.
Among the headline additions is Moktar, who will make the live debut of his acclaimed project, while Cosmo’s Midnight bring their genre-blurring electronic pop and Winston Surfshirt adds his effortlessly soulful blend of hip-hop, funk and R&B. Kirin J Callinan joins the bill alongside Melbourne synth-pop outfit Cousin Tony’s Brand New Firebird, genre-defying producer Kumi and the joyous dancefloor collective Sunshine & Disco Faith Choir.
The expanded program also welcomes art-pop outfit KOSMETIKA, Adelaide rock six-piece West Thebarton, electronic soul collective Tony Soprano Band, Blue Radio DJs and psychedelic trio Brown Spirits. Meanwhile, PUNT FEST II returns on Saturday 29 August, transforming the historic Punters Club into a three-stage celebration of live music and DJs.
One of the festival’s centrepieces arrives on Saturday 18 July with High Ground: In Motion, a sprawling event stretching across all three venues. The lineup features Skeleten, Sleepazoid, XIAO XIAO, Orange Moon, No News, Rain Dogs, Horatio Luna, DJ LUV YOU, Public Figures, Setwun & The Soulstranauts and Miles Nautu, showcasing the breadth of Australia’s thriving independent scene.
Ahead of that, High Ground joins forces with The StandardX Melbourne for a special rooftop session on 11 July, where Disco Mediterranea will deliver a two-hour sunset soundtrack before their headline appearance at The Evelyn later in the festival.
The latest announcement builds on an already impressive opening run that has seen Protomartyr, Mark Ernestus & Ndagga Rhythm Force, Violent Magic Orchestra, Jenevieve and Dry Cleaning all perform, with the latter drawing a packed crowd for a free show at Punters Club.
Rather than simply presenting another festival, High Ground feels like a statement about the continuing importance of independent venues and local music communities. Across six weeks, Fitzroy’s most iconic stages become home to artists operating at the edges of genre, reaffirming the suburb’s enduring reputation as one of Australia’s great musical neighbourhoods.
