News: Montello Embrace Uncertainty and Indie Nostalgia on Infectious New Single ‘The Universe Replied…’

Manchester indie quartet Montello return with their latest offering, ‘The Universe Replied…’, a soaring, infectious single that captures the band’s signature ability to transform melancholy into something uplifting, where reflection moves with rhythm rather than getting lost in sorrow.

Drawing influence from the timeless songwriting of The Smiths and the atmospheric richness of The Cure, while embracing the vibrant energy of early-2000s indie, Montello strike a compelling balance between nostalgia and forward-thinking ambition. ‘The Universe Replied…’ is a track that looks back without becoming stuck there, finding beauty in uncertainty while encouraging listeners to keep moving.

Produced by Luke Owens of fast-rising Manchester band Bank Holiday, the single combines shimmering guitar lines, driving rhythms and expansive synth textures with heartfelt vocals that bring real emotional depth. The result is a bittersweet yet uplifting anthem, pairing indie immediacy with the swagger and confidence associated with The Stone Roses, a quality that has become a defining feature of Montello’s electrifying live shows.

At its core, ‘The Universe Replied…’ is a song about embracing the unknown. The band explain:

“The Universe Replied… is a song that asks more questions than it gives answers – it’s very difficult as a young adult to feel like you have a clear cut career and a laid out life ahead of you, so it’s talking about my way of throwing caution to the wind and not knowing what the universe has planned for you, me or anyone.”

That sense of uncertainty fuels the track’s emotional pull. Rather than searching for easy answers, Montello celebrate the freedom that comes with accepting the unpredictability of life. Their latest single turns hesitation into momentum, creating a soundtrack for anyone navigating change, ambition and the search for direction.

‘The Universe Replied…’ marks another confident step forward for a band rapidly carving out their own place within Manchester’s thriving indie scene. With irresistible hooks, cinematic textures and a genuine emotional honesty, Montello continue to honour the sounds that inspired them while developing a distinct identity of their own.

Since the release of their debut EP, which sparked their rapid rise, Montello have built an impressive reputation through relentless touring and standout festival appearances, including Truck Festival and Isle of Wight Festival. Following performances at iconic venues including O2 Ritz Manchester and Gorilla, the band reached another milestone by headlining and selling out Deaf Institute.

With ‘The Universe Replied…’, Montello prove they are more than a band inspired by the past. They are a group using those influences as a foundation for something fresh, ambitious and unmistakably their own.
