There are some bands you instinctively know are building something special, and Zipper continue to confirm that feeling with every release. Following the dazzling ‘Hiko’ (read my review here), new track ‘Ear’ reveals another facet of the Melbourne outfit’s endlessly compelling sound, proving they are one of the most exciting post-punk bands currently emerging from Australia.
Where ‘Hiko’ surged with restless urgency, ‘Ear’ is more patient and immersive, letting its shimmering guitars and understated propulsion unfold with effortless confidence. Wrapped in an unmistakable eighties glow, the track carries echoes of classic post-punk and dream pop without ever sounding beholden to nostalgia. Instead, Zipper shape those influences into something fresh, cinematic and quietly intoxicating.
Haruka Sato’s bilingual Japanese and English vocals remain one of the band’s defining strengths. Floating above the music with an almost weightless grace, the shifting languages add another layer of mystery and emotional depth, blurring meaning while amplifying atmosphere. It’s a performance that feels both intimate and elusive, drawing the listener ever deeper into the song’s hypnotic spell.
I’ve been enthusiastic about Zipper from the outset, and ‘Ear’ only strengthens that conviction. Rich in texture, beautifully restrained and effortlessly stylish, it’s another superb release from a band that seems incapable of putting a foot wrong. If this is any indication of what’s still to come later this year, Zipper’s upward trajectory looks unstoppable.
