Sometimes the most affecting songs arrive with barely a whisper. On ‘Beautiful Woman on the Coast in Portugal’, Tamara & the Dreams strips away the jangling indie exuberance that made earlier singles so irresistible, revealing something more intimate, reflective and quietly devastating beneath the surface.
Written after a solo trip through Portugal, the track captures that intoxicating intersection of freedom, desire and self-awareness that seems to define your twenties. Over delicate folk arrangements, Tamara Reichman explores the complicated experience of seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes. As she explains, the song grew from “this real mid-twenties coming-of-age moment” while recognising that “we’re always watching ourselves being watched”—a perceptive observation that gives the song an emotional depth well beyond its understated beauty.
I wrote this song when I was first discovering solo travel. It felt like this real mid-twenties coming-of-age moment – discovering being totally free, being totally hot, being a woman, being desirable. I think the song is really about how, as women, we’re always watching ourselves being watched. We’re always thinking about how our bodies look or the position we’re sitting or standing in. There’s always that voice in our head.
The shift towards a more folk-centred sound feels completely natural. Echoes of Joni Mitchell and Julia Jacklin drift through the song, but Tamara’s sharp lyrical eye and conversational warmth remain unmistakably her own. It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest arrangements carry the greatest emotional weight.
‘Beautiful Woman on the Coast in Portugal’ is out now and you can download and stream here.
The single also heralds the arrival of the debut album ‘Too True To Be Good’, due in November, and if this is any indication, it promises to be Tamara’s most personal and compelling work yet. Melbourne readers can catch Tamara performing a special solo launch show tonight at The Tramway Hotel—a fitting setting for songs that feel this close, honest and beautifully human. Tickets available here.
