News: The Limiñanas and Laurent Garnier unveil details of new album and share ‘Que Calor’

FRENCH psych purveyors The Limiñanas and producer and DJ Laurent Garnier are set to release a collaborative album entitled Pelicula, splicing the trio’s affections for psychedelia with their equal fondness for cinema.

Anton Newcombe was also key in the cementing of their friendship and musical partnership. Laurent worked alongside the trio of musical forces that became L’épée – The Limiñanas, Newcombe, and Emannuelle Seigner – an immensely enthralling psychedelic project with Newcombe’s instantly recognisable, tidal guitar sound and mesmerising vocals from Marie Limiñana.

The trio, couple Lionel and Marie Limiñana and Garnier, originally met in 2017. The Limiñanas had been invited to perform at Yeah Festival by Garnier, where – after being captivated by Lionel’s ringtone, the signature riff from The Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie” – the Parisian artist became transfixed with the Perpignan natives’ singular sound; locked into their now-blossoming aural adventures.

Years later, the three have concocted the kaleidoscopic, cinematic ‘De Película’: a record that feels like a walk on the wild side and one straight out of a film noir. It’s an album that tells a story, a heated road trip following Juliette and Saul, two teenage rascals straight out of a ‘60s classic movie – think Breathless meets Wild at Heart.”

In line with this synopsis, the album was first illuminated with “Saul” – The Limiñanas and Laurent Garnier have also now shared “Que Calor”, an equally vibrant, pulsating synth-exuberant delight. The track also features thrillingly lilting vocals from Edi Pistolas, that aid in the track’s ability to plumb the wondrous depths of international psychedelia.

De Película, a true concept album – or rather “an Italian anthology film” as Lionel Limiñana describes it – in its psychedelic, cinematic reverie, envisions: …squalid brothels, third-rate dance clubs, ‘60s vintage caravans, smack, Roger Harth and Donald Cardwell productions, distortion and fuzz-pedal sound effects.”

Alongside Juliette and Saul, De Pelicula also includes characters like “…Gilles Deleuze, Professor X and the preacher from The Night of the Hunter…”; spinning multiple narrative yarns in a wondrously drama-inspired record. The album does all this through a vast, eclectic spectrum of musical cornerstones.

As well as evolving through a shared love of Can, the record also developed it’s myriad dimensions through “…trance music, psychedelics, but also dancing and all those “genres of music that allow you to drift off…”, Laurent Garnier says. These elements combined to make an album that was “…neither a Limiñanas techno record nor a Laurent Garnier rock album…”, a “…fully collaborative project.”

De Pelicula will be released on Because Music on September 10th; see the cinematic teaser for the album here. Listen to “Que Calor” below.
