Manchester’s T.R. Burge & The Temple share the dark, reflective and beautifully spacious new single ‘This Bird Is Flown’, released alongside the announcement of their upcoming debut album, Godache. I’m very excited to be running the premiere.
Opening with fragile lead vocals and gently strummed acoustic guitar, ‘This Bird Is Flown’ immediately establishes an atmosphere that recalls Nick Cave, with poetic lyricism drifting through an eerie haze. As the track develops, spacious drums, warming bass and stunning delay-soaked violin lines weave through the soundscape, creating something murky, unsettling and deeply melancholic.
As the song grows, it begins to feel as though it belongs on the soundtrack to an emotionally charged Peaky Blinders scene, balancing a cinematic quality with something gritty, understated and distinctly intimate. At the track’s midpoint, boxy, distant echoes of spoken female vocals emerge, reflecting beautifully against Burge’s smoky, gruff delivery. The contrast creates a striking sense of tension, bringing to mind the likes of Man/Woman/Chainsaw and Guillemots, while highlighting the experimental edge that quietly bubbles beneath the surface throughout.
At the centre of ‘This Bird Is Flown’ is a striking piece of imagery born from a dream. Burge dreamed of a woman standing at the edge of a promenade, staring out towards the ocean, seemingly mourning someone who had left. The image stayed with him, eventually becoming the emotional seed from which the song’s lyrics grew. A period of intense reading around esoteric ideas subsequently found its way into the writing, introducing strange and suggestive imagery without ever overwhelming the song’s deeply human emotional core.
“The lyrics relate to a dream I had in which a woman was standing on the edge of a promenade of some kind, looking out at the ocean. She looked as if she was mourning the loss of something. Someone who had left. It was a very vivid and emotionally charged image. The rest of the imagery in the song then built around this. When recording this song at Klangbild studios in Berlin, Pete, our drummer, Liam, our mate/technician, and I had the best day ever, drinking some beers and listening to Martin J. Fiedler and Aninka create, play and overlay the violin parts. It was heaven. I’ll never forget hearing that in the moment come to life.”
The song was recorded, mixed and produced at Klangbild Studios in Berlin, where Burge, drummer Pete Leaver, friend and technician Liam, and longtime collaborator Martin J. Fiedler watched Aninka Rosa create and layer the breathtaking violin parts. For Burge, the session became one of those rare recording experiences that remains inseparable from the music itself.
Berlin has become an important part of the band’s story. Although T.R. Burge & The Temple were only formally established in Manchester in 2024, the project’s beginnings stretch back eight years to a chance meeting in Kreuzberg. Burge, already moving between Manchester and Berlin while involved in another Manchester project, encountered Fiedler in a bar. Approached on a friend’s dare, Fiedler handed him an early demo. That seemingly incidental encounter would eventually become the foundation for Godache.
The album took three years to make, with Klangbild serving as its creative home. One song was recorded initially in Manchester before being brought to Berlin for mixing and production, deliberately allowing both cities to exist within the same record. The geography feels fitting. Godache is rooted in Manchester, but its identity has been shaped by the distance, contrast and creative connection between the two cities.
With ‘This Bird Is Flown’, T.R. Burge & The Temple offer a compelling first glimpse into that world. Dark and spacious but never static, the track balances intimacy with experimentation, allowing its atmosphere to continually shift beneath the weight of Burge’s vocals and Rosa’s haunting violin.
