Who doesn’t like a good cover. In fact, who doesn’t like a good Kate Bush cover (or a good cut-up piece of Kate Bush, remembering Utah Saints something good) for that matter. It’s the sort of pub discussion that men, well men who like music, have in pubs – the best cover of all time. I always find it rather a tricky one, given all the brilliant Motown, Reggae and Punk covers there are about (check out Snuff’s version of magic moments if you need any further convincing of the latter), and I always loved 80’s/90’s indie also-rans Cud (and I can scarcely believe I went with that description of them, given my seemingly undying adoration of them) and their versions of both The Kinks Lola, and better still, Hot Chocolate‘s You sexy thing.
London’s Josh Record (real name, yes) has been making (ahem) a name for himself on the cool singer-songwriter scene, a scene currently so packed that it’s indeed a minor miracle if you are noticed in any way at all. We’ve already written about his ep ‘Bones’, which we liked quite a bit, and he’s followed that up by covering Kate Bush’s classic running up that hill. He’s transported it from a spacey pop song, to a spacey-folky song. His angelic voice at one delicate and emotional in it’s delivery, and his acoustic guitar playing these chiming figures that gives it a whole new feel. There’s much harmonising from a gaggle of singers (is a gaggle the right sort of word) that adds a warmth to the song that the original doesn’t have.
