BRISTOL’S post-rave sonic guerillas SCALPING have followed up May’s single drop, “Empty Cascade” by doubling down and supplying that dark, heavy breaks muscle with a new 360° video, directed by Jason Baker; and a busy old summer has begun, with their FLOOD EP out on new home Houndstooth at the end of last week.
FLOOD is the band’s first full-length project and is followed by a hotly anticipated string of UK dates from autumn into early winter, beginning with a now-sold out show in Peckham Audio on September 2nd and later twinning up with the genius of Squarepusher for some support slots. SCALPING and Squarepusher? Brain melt ensured.
“Empty Cascade”, the second single from the EP, is a mission statement, we’re told, mixing the thrum of tribal drums, the sear of acid and the sludge, howl and siren song of guitars in an intoxicating call to the twilit floor. And that video brings all the murk and the brilliance of the SCALPING experience right to yo’ door.
This single follows on from the fire of last winter’s single drop, “Monolithium”, which came with a side-order of mindbending visuals and well, intense; what do you think? Were you lucky enough to witness their secret split set iwth AK/DK at End of the Road a year or two back? I mean …. a tipi sonic apocalypse.
Bristolians James Rushforth, Alex Hill, Isaac Jones, Jamie Thomas and Jason Baker got together in 2017 with a desire to splice their hometown’s off-kilter dance music to noise-rock and post-punk. And won.
